Since we have been talking about Minamata disease a bit in class, I thought I'd share a recent article I came across about Mercury levels in Taiji, Japan.

  1. Thanks! This is a good article. Actually, news about these tests in Taiji came out in English a couple of days before the news came out in Japanese. Sometimes the media in Japan is hesitant to deal with the issue of mercury in fish and whale or dolphin meat.

A related issue is the move "The Cove." Dolphin hunting in the same town, Taiji, is its subject. When it got an Academy Award for Best Documentary, NHK cut that part of the broadcast. It's a touchy subject here.

  2. That's very good to know. I'll be sure be careful what I say about it to people. I am strongly against Japan's whaling practices because they are cheating the system and careless about killing endangered species. I'll never eat whale or dolphin meat.
